Light is reflected off them and because of this bright strip of light appears that looks running perpendicular to the inclusions. Technically this phenomenon is known as 'chatoyancy' that comes from the French word 'chat' (for cat) and 'oeil' (for eye). Also because of cat's eye phenomenon, the stone is given cabochon cut, as the effect becomes more visible then.
