Bloodstone is a semi precious stone that is also known as heliotrope stone> Heliotrope is a Greek word where helios means, "the Sun" and tropos means "to turn". It is believed that bloodstone when immersed in water, the color turns to Sun red. It is also believed that bloodstone got its name because of its appearance which is a very dark green having red veins or red spots resembling the blood.

Bloodstone is also known as blood Jasper in trade. But actually it is not a jasper, but a kind of dark green chalcedony that is a cryptochrystalline variety of Quartz.
