Diamond is not a new stone as it has been known since ages. Deccan Highlands in India is the earliest known source of diamond which is now called Golconda. In 1725 deposits of diamonds were also found in Brazil. Both India and Brazil pured out enough of diamonds that the shortage was felt. Then in 1865 South Africa left both of these behind in the diamond race when Erasmus Jacobs, the 15-year-old son of a farmer found a very beautiful stone. He took this stone to his home where they gave this to their family friend Schalk Van Neikirk. He said that it was a 21-carat yellow diamond. It was called the Eureka that was sold for £500.
In 1868 a Swartboy found another beautiful stone near the Orange River. Van Neikirk after inspecting that stone immediately gave all his livestocks to him. He then sold it for £11,200. Cecil Rhodes then founded a diamond empire. With this South Africa became a very popular place for diamonds.
