Meaning

Amazonite is the rare green variety of microcline that is used as a semiprecious stone. It is also known as amazon stone. The name microcline comes from two Greek words meaning little and inclined, referring to the cleavage angle's slight inclination from ninety degrees.

Amazonite comes with a hardness of 6 to 6.5 and the color varies in various shades of green to blue-green. It has a vitreous luster with transparency ranging from being opaque to translucent.

Amazonite Stone History

Ethiopia and Egypt are the places where the Amazonite stone mines were found thousands of years back. Also while exploring the Tutankhamen tomb, scientists have found the rings, amulets, earrings and beads made from Amazonite stone. Also in 1784. Amazonite stones were found in South Ural.

Although Amazonite got its name from Amazon river but there are no clues of its presence near or at Amazon river. Amazonite stone is found in Zimbabwe, Brazil, United States, Russia, Namibia and Australia. It is in the form of pale green Microline that is found in found in Brazil, U.S.S.R., and U.S as a potash feldspar. For centuries it was considered to be a Jade Stone. Pike's Peak is the best place from where the best quality of Amazonite is found.

The color of Amazonite stone ranges from bright green to bluish green with light striations. This stone is very soft and on Mohs scale it ranges from 5-6. Amazonite is the stone for Virgo.
